Job description
The Vessel Operations Engineer is a pivotal offshore role in Saipem's LTA Saudi Arabia project. This engineer ensures that marine vessel operations, such as pipe laying, jacket installation, and heavy lift activities, are executed efficiently, safely, and according to client and regulatory standards. The role bridges onshore planning with offshore execution and plays a leadership part in vessel mobilization, coordination of offshore support services (e.g., ROV, diving, pre-commissioning), and daily operations reporting. The successful candidate will act as the main link between the project team and the Vessel Management Team (VMT) and is responsible for supporting and advising vessel personnel, interfacing with client representatives onboard, and ensuring technical and operational compliance across all phases of marine activity.

Key responsibilities
- Ensure compliance with QA/QC and HSE requirements throughout operations.
- Review project documentation and suggest improvements to procedures.
- Act as the primary offshore representative for the project onboard vessels.
- Coordinate with the Vessel Management Team and Client Representatives.
- Assist in planning and execution of vessel operations and ensure alignment with contractual requirements.
- Review installation procedures, loadout, and sea fastening plans.
- Lead preparation and mobilization activities including equipment readiness and HR allocation.
- Liaise with engineering, procurement, and asset teams to ensure delivery of materials and services.
- Witness and inspect loadouts and sea fastening of installation materials.
- Oversee subcontracting for services such as ROV, survey, NDT, and diving.
- Track offshore activity, compile DPRs, and support project invoicing close-out.
- Support continuous optimization of planning efficiency and vessel usage.
- Interface with fabrication facilities to ensure readiness for offshore deployment.
- Lead qualification of installation vessels for client acceptance.
- Compile final project reports and documentation for project close-out.
Experience & skills
- Bachelorâs degree in Mechanical, Structural, Marine or Civil Engineering
- Minimum of 3â5 yearsâ experience in offshore construction activities
- Experience with offshore vessels such as HLVs, CLVs, Pipelay Vessels, DSVs
- Demonstrated leadership in offshore project execution and operations
- Strong understanding of offshore installation techniques: pipelines, jackets, topsides
- Familiarity with installation-related procurement and logistics coordination
- Excellent communication, documentation, and coordination skills
- Knowledge of offshore equipment interfaces (tensioners, stingers, reels)
- Proficiency in reading and interpreting engineering drawings and procedures
- Strong attention to detail and ability to identify and mitigate operational risks
- Availability to work under a rotation schedule (onshore/offshore dual conditions)
- Familiar with installation factors impacting offshore oil field development
- Experience in managing project HR preparations for offshore assignments
- Proven ability to compile close-out documentation and support invoicing
