Job description
Join the Legal team to protect Barclays, its employees, and its brands while ensuring global competitiveness and compliance with legal standards. Your responsibilities will include risk mitigation, managing strategic transactions, and overseeing business contracts. The purpose of the role is to ensure that operations in the country or region are conducted in compliance with applicable laws and regulations, and to help the bank manage legal and reputational risks. The AVP will provide legal support across regulatory, transactional, and project-based workstreams, represent the bank in proceedings, ensure documentation compliance, stay informed of regulatory changes, and deliver internal training programs.

Key responsibilities
- Development and implementation of best practice legal strategies for risk management and compliance.
- Legal advice and support to the bank's country coverage teams on a wide range of legal issues, including regulatory compliance, risk management, project management and transactional matters.
- Representation of the bank in legal proceedings related to its operations in the country or region, such as litigation, arbitration, and regulatory investigations.
- Creation and review of legal documents such as loan agreements, security documents, and other financing documents to ensure compliance with applicable laws and regulations.
- Legal research and analysis to stay up to date on changes in laws and regulations that may impact the bank's operations in the country or region.
- Developing and delivering training programmes to educate employees on legal and regulatory requirements related to the bank's operations in the country or region.
- Pro-active identification, communication, and provision of legal advice on applicable laws, rules and regulations (LRRs).
- Ensuring that LRRs are effectively allocated to, and adequately reflected within, the relevant policies, standards and controls.
- Advise and influence decision making, contribute to policy development and take responsibility for operational effectiveness.
- Lead a team performing complex tasks, using well developed professional knowledge and skills to deliver on work that impacts the whole business function.
- Set objectives and coach employees in pursuit of those objectives, appraisal of performance relative to objectives and determination of reward outcomes.
- Lead collaborative assignments and guide team members through structured assignments.
- Identify the need for inclusion of other areas of specialisation to complete assignments.
- Identify new directions for assignments and/or projects using cross functional methodologies.
- Consult on complex issues; provide advice to People Leaders to support resolution of escalated issues.
- Identify ways to mitigate risk and develop new policies/procedures in support of the control and governance agenda.
- Take ownership for managing risk and strengthening controls in relation to the work done.
- Collaborate with other work areas to align with business strategy and activity.
- Engage in complex analysis of data from multiple internal and external sources.
- Communicate complex and sensitive information effectively.

Experience & skills
- Extensive experience in legal advisory roles within financial institutions.
- Strong knowledge of UAE laws and international banking regulations.
- Proven track record in litigation, arbitration, and regulatory investigations.
- Ability to lead and develop legal strategy aligned with risk management.
- Experience in drafting and reviewing complex legal documents.
- Ability to interpret changes in laws/regulations and translate into actionable policy.
- Experience delivering legal and compliance training.
- Strong analytical and decision-making capabilities.
- Leadership experience in legal teams or related functions.
- Ability to influence and align stakeholders across departments.
